Welcome to my Fitting Room: NYC Shopping

Today I did some shopping, got way too full at lunch, and fell in love with New York City all over again. As I mentioned in a previous post, Roger was relocated to a different part of Manhattan--he's now staying along 42nd Street, about a 20 minute walk from Times Square. Luckily for him (and for me!) this condo is much newer and a lot nicer. The floors are hardwood. The bathroom has crisp and clean lines. The kitchen is super small, but has stainless appliances. The building itself has an upscale gym & spa with a built-in Pilates studio as well as in-house dry-cleaning. I don't even want to tell you how much it costs to rent. It became very apparent this morning that the only people who can afford this lifestyle are the ones that start their work days bright and impossibly early; hence their disregard for proper drapery. Feb 28 - Bright I didn't mind. It gave me time to enjoy the view and my tea before heading out for the day. Feb 28 - Teatime This is what I wore for my outing: Sweater - Jacob, sale rack for $20. I thought I made a mistake when I bought it, but now I like it. Girls are fickle like that. Necklace - Forever 21. Feb 28 - Bright lipstick Boots - Aldo, last season for $40. Socks - love! I bought these the last time I was in NYC. Feb 28 - Socks These boots were meant for walking! I set off in the direction of Times Square, with no particular plans in mind. I popped into a few stores along the way, bought a pair of sunglasses (they were a necessity after getting some sort of New York street gunk in my eye--to be honest, I think it was cigarette ash), and took some touristy photos. I also got Chipotle for lunch, which proved to be big enough portion to keep me full past dinnertime. Feb 28 - Times Square Urban Outfitters drew me in. I have been looking for a pair of faded and frayed jean shorts ever since I got over my phase of "OMG faded and frayed jean shorts are so trashy." I don't know what caused the change of heart. When they came out last summer, I cringed every time I saw a teenybopper with their bum hanging out, but now I want a pair so badly. (Less bum on display though... I am, after-all, almost in my mid-twenties.) How 90s and awesome is this look? I didn't buy these shorts on account of them being TOO short, but I'm on the lookout for a better pair with more coverage. Feb 28 - 90s look After trying on NSFW clothes, I switched gears and went into LOFT looking for business casual attire. I discovered their Petite section, which was clothes heaven for short girl like me. I bought this cropped jacket. I love the asymmetrical zippers and the fact that it fits! Feb 28 - Cropped jacket I also picked up this white blouse for 40% off. Feb 28 - White top My next stop was Aritzia on 5th Avenue. While visiting the store in January, I promised one of the salesladies that I would come back for the Cohen black dress pants next time I was in the area. Guess what? She was working today and remembered me! Needless to say, I bought the pants and fell in love with a few other items. I told the girl that she was downright mean. She chose for me a couple of shirts that were exactly my style, but oh-so-out-of my price range. I shouldn't have tried them on, but I did and they were all wonderful, especially the $145 plain white sweater. Although I loved it, I couldn't justify spending that much, especially on something so basic, and not when my significant other in an Accountant. That would just not look good on the books! Haha. Feb 28 - So Mean Two visits in and I have officially made up my mind as to what I love best about New York: I love how easy it is NOT to get lost here! Seriously, hats off to the city planners. Numbering streets was an act of pure genius. Roger gave me his Metro pass, but I absolutely love walking in this city, especially because it feels warmer here than it does in Canada. So now I'm back at the condo, having more tea, and admiring the lovely things I purchased today. Did I say my favourite thing about New York was the walking? Let me add one more thing--the shopping! Ready, Jet-set, Go!

20140226-172544.jpg Here I am, writing at the airport again. In T-minus 3 hours I'll be in New York City for a much-needed reunion with my love. After a crazy morning and a highway drive with duel-wheel truck bullies in the fast lane, I'm happy to have a Chai Tea Latte in my hand and excitement in my heart. Let me tell you a bit about this morning's kerfuffles while I wait for my plane to board. Tunders went absolutely bonkers on me as I attempted to leave my house. He has been showing signs of separation anxiety lately with Roger gone and me at work all day. Today he took these symptoms to the next level. Barking, whining, tap-dancing around the front foyer as I prepped to take my luggage to my car. It took all the strength I could muster to keep the poor guy inside. One bag out the door, check! Second bag out the door... byebye Tunders and hello big dog scratch on my leggings. Do you know how hard it is to convince a 100-lb something dog to come back inside when all he wants to do is go with you? Mission impossible. I apologize to my neighbours for swearing and to the mailman that probably near peed himself. There was Tundra looking up at the back hatch of my car with hopeful anticipation. Every time I tried to coax him toward me, he ran away. Luckily with the aid of multiple treats I managed to herd him to the door. I then shut it and ran. Although my heart breaks for my saddest puppy in the world, it's nice to know someone will miss me immensely while I'm gone! I promise to keep you posted on take 2 of NYC adventures! 🙂

An Exciting Day of Closet Organization and Puttering About

You know you miss someone when you start co-mingling your socks into one drawer and you know they've been gone too long when you start taking over their closet space. Sorry Roger, but I had to do it. Let's just say it's me wanting to be closer to you. Sunday is usually my baking day, but I'm on a major health kick, so I spent the afternoon doing equally homely things, such as cleaning, reorganizing my closets, and mending weathered clothes. What gave me all the energy to do all this? For starters, I slept in past the single digits and immediately hit the gym for some cardio. I then made myself the best smoothie with Pineapples, Cherries, Grapes, Strawberry Banana juice, flax, and vanilla protein powder. While enjoying a late breakfast, I found out my cousin and his wife welcomed a new bundle of joy into their family--the first baby in our family since my brother was born 16 years ago. Little Jackson arrived just in time after the Canadian hockey team's big Olympic Gold win. What an exciting day! Happiness is contagious and my favourite thing to do when I'm happy is putter about the house doing tedious things. (No joke--I'm in my element while doing things that others would consider downright boring.) I colour-coded my work attire (see below for picture), neatly arranged my underwear and bra drawers, and mixed all of mine and Roger's socks together. I also condensed some of his t-shirts onto one shelf, so I'd have a designated space for my bedtime tank-tops. Feb 22 - Jammie Shirts Feb 22 - Organization I didn't stop there. There's a pair of black pants that I absolutely love and because I wear them all the time, the front clasps were hanging dangerously by a thread. I broke out my sewing kit and repaired them. A stitch in time saves nine! While I was at it, I hemmed a new dress. This took me longer than expected as I sewed it all by hand. Note to self: Remember to ask for a sewing machine for Christmas. Feb 23 - Sewing I think I took it from frumpy to fabulous. What do you think? Feb 23 - Long Dress I may not be able to wear it to work anymore, but it's a small sacrifice to make. I can't wait to wear it out to dinner in New York. We have reservations next Saturday night. 🙂 Feb 23 - Cropped Dress I have to share one other thing with you guys because I absolutely died of laughter when I discovered it. Three years together and Roger managed to keep this gem of a shirt hidden from me beneath his gym shirts: Feb 22 - 2 Funky This is one of those shirts that you absolutely must not give to the clothing giveaway. You have to keep it for at least two more decades so you can wear it while picking up your kids from school while they're going through their awkward teenybopper stage. It reminds me of this shirt my dad owned in the early 90s: Scan 15 Oh, I'm giggling. So now I'm packing for New York City and enjoying a cup of tea. (Another two of my all-time favourite activities.) Can you tell I'm slightly elated from today's events? Thanks for reading, please don't be too mad at me (Dad & Roger) and happy Sunday! 🙂

Having a “Me” Weekend

Since waking up tired every morning this week, I've been looking forward to a full weekend of rest, relaxation, and a fair bit of exercise. A mini-makeover was very necessary because my eyes were puffy, my skin was dull, and I was feeling sluggish from inactivity. I didn't bother making other weekend plans beyond sleep and pampering myself. I slept in this morning, went to the gym and took Tundra for a long walk this afternoon, and now I'm celebrating with a glass of wine. Feb 22 - Bathtime Last night I poured myself a peach-scented bubble bath with all the essentials, including epsom salts and an all-natural goat's milk soap. Feb 22 - Bubble Bath I exfoliated with gloves and a loofah. After cleansing my face, I spritzed it with spring water, and applied a hydrating moisturizer. I also applied a leave-in conditioner to my hair. Feb 22 - Face Regime Now I am sipping on a glass of red wine, eating strawberries, and writing while watching "Breakfast at Tiffanys" on Netflix. The strawberries are good for my skin; the wine simply complements them. I've watched this movie a million times, but I'm especially enjoying it right now. It has me so excited for my next visit to New York. I leave on Wednesday! Feb 22 - Wine Snuggly blankets, strawberries, girly movies, spa treatments, and wine.. I'm starting to feel like my energetic self again!
